Genital Herpes Test
Genital herpes is a viral STI that is caused by the herpes simplex virus. It can spread easily and cannot be cured; however, many people with the condition tend to live without it causing them or their partners significant danger or discomfort. Unlike most bacterial STIs, genital herpes isn’t likely to lead to extremely serious complications. However, it is important to know whether you have it to ensure that you take precautions when having sex with a new partner or if you intend on becoming pregnant.
Similar to most STIs, not everyone has symptoms of genital herpes. Should you experience symptoms, they are likely to be at their worst at the start of an outbreak and then become less severe with every additional outbreak.
How does a genital herpes home test work?
There are two genital herpes tests provided by our partner site LabsDirect.com. You can choose to either provide a diagnosis based on a urine sample with a Genital Herpes urine test. Or if you notice symptoms such as red blisters around your genital area and would like to know whether herpes simplex is the cause, you could take a symptomatic lesion swab of the area and send it to the laboratory for a diagnosis.
Both tests are laboratory tests, just like the ones used by GUM clinics, the only difference is that you collect the sample, send it to the laboratory and receive the results first hand, providing you with confidentiality when you need it most.
Simply complete an online order with LabsDirect and collect a swab of the affected area or urine sample and send it back to our partner laboratory. All results will be made available as soon as possible in your own private online account to view.
Which genital herpes test should I choose?
We recommend that you use the Genital Herpes urine test if you don’t have any symptoms and want a diagnosis or the Symptomatic Lesion Swab test for genital herpes if you are experiencing symptoms and you would like to know what’s causing them.
When can I expect my genital herpes test results back?
Tests results will usually be available within five days of the laboratory receiving your specimen. You’ll be notified when you can log into your private member’s area to view your genital herpes test results. Should you require any help in interpreting these results, we’ll be happy to help.
What do I do if my genital herpes test is positive?
Genital herpes cannot be cured; however, it can effectively be managed with the help of a variety of genital herpes treatments, so it’s very important that you don’t panic when you receive the results of your genital herpes test. We’d recommend that you visit your doctor as soon as possible after your diagnosis so that you can receive the right help and support straight away. Your diagnosis shouldn’t cause any unnecessary worry, as many people live with the condition without it causing them any discomfort or distress. You may be able to order Aciclovir, Famvir or Valtrex from us; however, these treatments should only be used in the event of an outbreak to shorten it and help you deal with the symptoms.
